This
is a show that progressed more and more and had become better and
better with each season. The words to describe how strong of a special
it is include the following: suspenseful, funny, dramatic, emotional,
and intense. All of these words put together in the best way possible
with a very well-written project like this. The best thing about it to
me is that it's full of great twists.
SPOILER TERRITORY:
Even
though you might be expecting some, the way the special executes the
twists makes it pop out at you and engages you in the story. Most
notably, the scene where White Diamond paralyzes Yellow and Blue and
takes control of them. It might've been guessable that would have
happened, but with the way the music intensifies the moment and how her
powers impact them through the animation, it brought goosebumps up my
spine. It got me 100% pulled into what was going on, and it made me
worry and wonder about what the gang was going to do.
The best
twist in the special comes toward the end where, in a very well-paced
sequence with Steven and White Diamond that had the most perfect musical
score to it, Steven's gem is removed by White. What happens afterwards
proves how the show is very clever and smooth at conveying morals of a
person's own understanding: the gem reforms into Steven's body. A moral
about being yourself, about change, or even just about loving yourself,
there are many of these great morals a person can cherish from this
special that make you appreciate the writing.
I especially love
the twist that comes right after Steven's diamond is removed, where
practically half of Steven's health derives from his diamond. It shows
how you cannot force something out of what makes someone who they are.
However, this is all to White's misunderstanding, and that's another
thing the special does very well: reasoning of the characters.
Where
Blue and Yellow have a short fight in the beginning(which, by the way,
is another great twist), Yellow has reasons for, at first, refusing to
help the others, coming from her paranoia of White. Once Steven, Connie,
and Blue convey another great moral to Yellow, it shows her complexity
as a character. The show has done a fantastic job at writing great,
complex mindsets and emotions for the characters and why they think this
way, along with how it makes them feel and cripples them, and how they
decide to change. These are just such wonderful, genuine, understandable
characters that I personally care so much about. White herself may seem
heartless, but with the dialogue that's written for her, it
demonstrates her reasons for what she's doing. A character that wants
her world to be perfect and flawless is the reason she begins to control
the main characters of the special. Had also wanting Pink Diamond to be
herself is why she removed Steven's gem, but it's very fascinating that
White is the only diamond of the 3, excluding Steven, that recognized
Steven as a half-human half-diamond hybrid. Very cleverly throwing her
off when seeing that Pink reformed as Steven. While showing the
intelligence that White has, where she says "...I only want you to be
yourself." is where a great misunderstanding comes in. Once she realizes
her flaw as a diamond, Steven explains that she should allow everyone
to be themselves(including herself), regardless of having flaws. It
reminded me of something I watched as a kid called "Wee Sing in
Sillyville." Even though it had a different moral, it still showed one
thing: even with your flaws, being yourself adds color to the world,
even to White when her face partially turned Pink. It's also very
interesting how, since White is the color white, her taking over the
minds of the other gems takes away their colors, and they're all colors
other than white, gray, and black. When we first saw White, she seemed
to have no personality and emotion. It makes me wonder how badly it
could've affected White with Pink being gone for so long. It's just
terrific writing.
This is also, like I said, a very well-paced
special. It smoothly transitions to each character opening up to Steven
and wanting to help him and respect him as who he is: Steven, not Pink.
It
also, in my opinion, gives practically everything we have been dying to
see in the show. We finally got to see a fusion between Steven and
Pearl, along with the fusion between Steven and Garnet. I will say that
the Rainbow Quartz fusion looks and sounds 100% accurate, though the
Sunstone one made me jump a bit. It did look really strange, but because
of that I absolutely love it. I highly admire a show that can make a
combination look like something you would've never expected yet still
seem believable. I also really admire a show that can change the outfits
of the characters throughout the show and can be able to give a good
reason why. We also finally get to see Lapis and Peridot again, and
their new designs look wonderful.
I have to be honest too in that
near the end, I love the rewritten song of "We are the Crystal Gems".
Not only that, but the one instant where White genuinely smiles is
something that made my heart genuinely smile as well. I don't know why,
but you kind of get this idea that everyone's been suffering for so
long, and once you see the highest of the authority show a legit, caring
smile after so long, even to the smallest detail of the bags under her
eyes, it kind of gives you a warm, happy feeling in the inside.
I
also love in the ending where you get to see all of the other crystal
gems that were corrupted in their bubbles, and you get to see their
designs of what they looked like, where are all very great-looking
designs. There are also characters that have been bubbled that we
finally get to see again, such as Centi and even Jasper, who I feel has
somehow got a redemption when talking to Amethyst as she might've
catched Jasper up with what's been going on. Even White Pearl turns back
into her normal self!
I especially was awestruck when I saw the
scene where, very cleverly to the point where my jaw dropped, Steven's
diamond reforms into himself after White removes it and the storyboard
is shown to have one side of the camera from Pink Steven's perspective,
and the other being from human Steven's perspective. That was such a
smart move when storyboarding this special because it shows how intense
the moment is for the characters. Brilliant. Just, brilliant.
I
could gush over this special forever, but do I have any problems with
it? Not really, just a couple of animation errors that I feel they
could've fixed. The show sometimes wouldn't get the scale of the
characters right, but there was one thing I caught on to in the
animation that surprised me: did you notice it? At the end, when White
diamond is glowing pink on her cheeks and says "Yellow...Blue!", she
reaches out to them with her right hand and right arm. However, in the
very next shot, she's reaching out to them with her left arm, even
though it was clearly not raised right before it as her left arm wasn't
covering her left shoulder like her right arm was. Replay the scene,
you'll see it given where the thumb is. I also felt that the one bit
where Steven welcomes White Pearl back after being free from White
Diamond's control could've used a bit more to it. I felt maybe Steven
could've said "Welcome back. It's me, Pink Diamond. But, I prefer
Steven." Maybe it could have shocked White Pearl and could've been
really happy to have seen Pink again. These are nitpicks, though, and if
these are my biggest problems with it, that's saying a lot on how good
this special is.
I wish I could've cried watching "Change Your
Mind", but it left me more awestruck by its brilliance. I feel as though
I cried in the inside because it makes me genuinely happy to have
watched a well-written, well-scored, well-animated special to a show
that has proved a show can become more and more sophisticated and
engaging throughout its course, and I am more than excited for the film
coming later this year.
